Obituary of Richard D. Bruce Sr.
Richard D. Bruce, Sr. left this world to be with his creator on Friday, August 2, 2019, at his home. He was born on January 19, 1934 in Monroe County, Indiana to the late Lloyd A. and Frona (Stogdill) Bruce. Richard married Deloris Jean Cain on October 12, 1954 in Kurtz, Indiana and they have four sons, Dale (Rita) Bruce, Scott (Roberta) Bruce, Curtis (Sherryl) Bruce and Michael (Sharla) Bruce, all from this area. Richard is survived by his wife, four sons, 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren and 9 step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Bertha (Sim) Brock of Morgantown, Nancy (the late Oliver) Deckard of Bloomington and Sandra (Gilbert) Hatton of Bardstown, Kentucky; one brother, Lloyd (Shirley) Bruce, Jr. of Bloomington; one uncle, Rex Bruce; one aunt, Nellie Long and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, one sister, Dolores Allender; one brother, Frank Bruce; two nephews Lloyd Cecil Allender and Steven Allender and one great-nephew, Rodney Allender. Richard was a member of Christian Tabernacle Church and also attended Victory Worship Center. He was a Lifetime Member of the A.F.S.M.E. Union and Good Sams (TriCounty Chapter 81); a member of the National Rifle Association; co-founder of the Monroe County CB Club (his handle being “Rockpicker”); was a volunteer at the Richland-Bean Blossom Family Store and was on the committee for the writing of the book “Elkinsville, Indiana The Town That Was.” In his earlier years, he was a painter and carpenter and worked at Sarkes Tarzian. He retired from Monroe County Community School Corporation where he was a carpenter. Services for Richard will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at 11 a.m. in Deremiah-Frye Mortuary Greene & Harrell Chapel located at 700 W. Gourley Pike, Bloomington, IN 47404 with Pastor Justin Rains officiating. Visitation is at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Methodist Cemetery in Ellettsville.
