We regretfully announce the passing of Betty Lynne Penzner of Palmyra, Virginia on Sunday, August 7th, 2022 at age 71 from acute myeloid leukemia. Betty was with her family and passed away peacefully. Betty was one of the strongest and bravest women to ever walk this earth. Betty, born on May 28th, 1951 to Edith & Jerry Penzner in Rye, New York, immediately brought joy and laughter into the world. After the family moved to Overland Park, Kansas. Betty went on to graduate from Shawnee Mission South High School in 1969. Betty went on to pursue a degree in Liberal Arts at George Washington University in Washington DC. Betty settled in the DC area, married and had two children. She was a wonderful and loving mother who gave her all to her family. Betty had an impressive resumé from her work on Capitol Hill, to her public relations business, to radio and journalism as a reporter for the local newspaper, the Gazette. Betty was a two time breast cancer survivor and spent many hours volunteering with the American Cancer Society as a result. We will never be able to fill the space left behind by her. Betty was predeceased by her father, Jerry Penzner, her mother, Edith Penzner (Freed), and her brother, Stephen. She is survived by her two children, Jennifer Richardson (Kirkland) and Jonathan Kirkland; her two grandchildren, Asher and Elias Richardson; her siblings, Barbara Penzner, Devra Ariel (Penzner), and Michael Penzner; and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins. Please consider a donation in Betty’s name to the incredible folks at Hospice of the Piedmont who cared for Betty every step of the way https://www.hopva.org/donate-online-now /or to the Virginia political campaigns of Josh Throneburg for Congress https://joshforvirginia.com/ and Kellen Squire for Delegate https://www.squireforyou.com/ because electing Democrats, particularly in red districts, was very important to her. Funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 10th at 2pm at Monticello Memory Gardens 670 Thomas Jefferson Parkway, Charlottesville, VA 22902.
