Helena Coons Hogg, formerly a resident of Keepsake Village in Columbus, passed away at 12:35 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. She was born on May 17, 1921, near Brownstown, the daughter of Horace F. and Vera Cope Gray. Helena was career-oriented and after graduating from Brownstown High School in 1938 she took classes at Indiana Business College. Following completion of her coursework, she was employed by Reeves Pulley Company, Noblitt Sparks (later Arvin), Cosco, Irwin Management, and later Cummins where she retired as an executive assistant in 1978. She also took business administration courses at Indiana University in conjunction with her work at Cummins. Later, Helena embarked on another career in interior decorating, which had been of great interest to her throughout the years. She worked at Thompson Furniture Company and started her own interior design consulting service. Throughout her professional life, Helena was blessed to have had the companionship and support of two wonderful husbands. Helena married Charles E. Coons of Columbus in 1944. They were actively involved in buying and selling property, attending church activities, and traveling. Following Charles's death in 1992, she met and later married Hubert H. Hogg, also of Columbus, in 1993. They enjoyed their post-retirement years with gardening, landscaping, interior decorating and traveling. They were also active at New Hope Christian Church, where Hubert had been a member for many years. He died in July of 2012. Helena is survived by her son, Stephen A. Coons, and Hubert's five children, Renny Davis, Selena Sawyer, Michael Hogg, Richard Hogg and Daniel Hogg. She was also blessed with her two extraordinary grandchildren, Monica D. (Brian) Anderson of Franklin and Todd A. Coons of Columbus; and three delightful great-grandchildren, Max, Reid, and Graham Anderson. In addition, she enjoyed getting to know Hubert's grandchildren, including Megan Peters of Brownstown. Other survivors include nieces, Jennifer Coons and Ann Gray Gibson; and nephews, William and Thomas Gray and Craig Coons. Helena was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Horace D. Gray; a nephew, Robert Gray; and her husbands. Calling hours will be at the Four Seasons Chapel, 1901 Taylor Road from 10 a.m. until noon on Wednesday, May 22, 2013. There will be a private funeral service later in the afternoon and burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or the donor's choice of organizations. Arrangements were made by Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th Street.
