Obituary of Hubert Kenney Sr.
MSgt. Hubert Kenney, Sr. was born June 27, 1928 in New Rochelle, NY to Helen Watkins and Frank Kenney. He attended and graduated from New Rochelle High School where he met and married his loving wife, Frances A. Kenney, on June 4, 1948. From this union was born seven children, consisting of five sons and two daughters. Hubert grew up a member of the Mount Carmel Church of New Rochelle, NY. Throughout his high school years, he became a highly touted participant in track and field there earning All-State honors, while also being a competitive Golden Gloves boxer. After high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Army where in addition to his sterling military career, he ran track for the U.S. Army Track Team. Soon after uniting with his wife, Frances A. Kenney in 1948, this military family traveled the country extensively, while Hubert, himself, had over eight years of overseas duty to include the Korean, and Vietnam War, and tours of duty in Thailand, Germany, and Japan. Hubert was the recipient of three Bronze Stars, nine Good Conduct Medals, numerous meritorious service awards, seven commendation medals, and the Combat Infantry Medal - only given to those who had 30 days or more in a hostile combat environment. Hubert served a total of 27 years in the U.S. Army, and achieved a well-deserved Honorable Discharge in 1974. Hubert, a true patriot, then continued to further his military career, and the careers of young men and women, while becoming a ROTC instructor in the Gary Community School Corporation for over 17 years, before retiring in 1997 with over 44 years of military service. Hubert and his family became members of Agape Ministries and Great Band MB Church for a short while before serving many years at Family Christian Center, where he and Frances were overseers of Care Fellowship Ministry and became Elders within the church. He was also a member of the Full Gospel Business Men. Hubert was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 61 years, Frances A. Kenney; his brother, Albert "Snubby" Kenney; and his sister, Helen Kenney. He leaves to cherish his memory his sister, Roberta Kenney; and brother, Frank L. Kenney, both of New Rochelle, NY; five sons: Hubert Kenney, Jr. (Claudette) of Yuma, AZ, Alan Kenney (Peggy) of Oklahoma City, OK, Daryl Kenney (Darleen), Vance R. Kenney (Carla), Darwin S. Kenney, and Renae Kenney, all of Gary, IN, and Karen Black of Monroe, LA; 18 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends; all whom loved him dearly, and will surely miss him. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Family Christian Center (340 45th Ave., Munster, IN) with Pastor Steve Munsey officiating. Interment Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville. Friends are invited to visit with the family Wednesday, April 24, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home (8178 Cline Ave., Schererville, IN) and again Thursday at Family Christian Center from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
