Theada Carter Dofflemoyer

January 20, 1936November 7, 2020

Theada Carter Dofflemoyer, 84, passed away peacefully and went to her heavenly home on November 7, 2020.

Theada was a lifelong resident of Virginia – born in Orange, raised in Remington, and lived her adult life in Culpeper. She met her future husband, Milton Carlyle Dofflemoyer, in Remington at a favorite swimming spot for teenagers along the Rappahannock River. Theada and Carlyle were married in 1954 and established their home in Culpeper; she is predeceased by Carlyle who passed away in 1973.

She is survived by two children, Bill (Rose) Dofflemoyer and Jane (Mike) Dodson; two grandchildren, Farren Dodson and Carlyle Dodson; and one sister, Margaret Embrey.

Theada is remembered for her unwavering faith and devotion to following Jesus; she was a lifelong member of Culpeper Baptist Church and loved the fellowship of the Ruth Sunday school class. Following the death of her husband, Theada rose to the challenges of being a single mom, furthering her education and starting her secretarial career at Cargill where she ultimately retired. In addition to being a loving and encouraging mother and grandmother, Theada was always quick to point out the positive, loved working in her home and yard, and spending time enjoying the beauty of nature, especially the mountains, sunsets and time at beach. She had an infectious smile for everyone she met.

Theada moved from her home of 60 years on Chestnut Street to The Culpeper Retirement Community in 2016 where she courageously spent the past 4 years on a journey with Alzheimer’s disease. Theada’s family appreciates the wonderful care she received from the staff at The Culpeper.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 circumstances, the family will hold a private burial service. The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Theada’s memory to Alzheimer’s Association (

Hi Jane ~ Mom and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Theada. We both have fond thoughts of your sweet, kind mother. Mom and I laughed about all the phone calls back and forth to Theada when our dogs disappeared and were always gone together for days! Theada would always call and say, Cricket's home, Reefus will be home soon. And she was always right! Hugs and prayers to you and your family.

Theada has a dear place in my heart. During the late 1970's to early 90's she and I taught children's Sunday School together with Georgia Lanham for 12 years at Culpeper Baptist Church. We made a great team! She always had such joy when working with the children and was such a sweet spirit in character. We regularly prayed together for each other and the children we taught. I look forward to the day when I will see her again in the presence of God.

Dear Jane, Bill, and family,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom, who was always one of my favorite people growing up. I never saw her that she didn’t have a smile on her face and a loving, caring comment to make. I know too well the sorrow of Alzheimer’s and dementia but pray that the wonderful memories of your mom will be a huge comfort in the days and years to come. Her faith in Jesus radiated from her and I’m so thankful for her influence in my life. Please know I’m thinking of you all and praying for strength and comfort.

I will always remember Theada’s continual optimism, beautiful smile, and Faith that even during the most difficult times, events would turn out for the best. She adored her children and grandchildren. Her face lit up when she saw Farren and Carlyle. My son, Ted, and her grandson, Carlyle, were good friends when they were children. I have fond memories of the boys playing in her yard. The past four years were tremendously difficult for Theada and her Family. I celebrate that she is now sitting at the feet of Jesus, our Savior!
With Love,
