Obituary of Lyman Keith Roll
Lyman Keith Roll was born in Baskett, Kentucky to Jack and Mary Roll on April 29, 1944. He loved Baskett but his family moved to Evansville when he was four. Lyman had 4 brothers and 3 sisters. They were a close knit and hardworking family. He attended Culver, Glenwood elementary schools and Bosse High School. He graduated in 1962. From a very young age Lyman became a newspaper carrier. He delivered his many papers early in the morning with his dog by his side, seven days a week. Lyman’s strong responsible character was formed during his paper carrier years. Also, this led to a lifelong love and devotion to reading and absorbing everything he read in the newspaper. Lyman was never bored. Living life was always interesting for him. It takes many good words to best describe the kind of man Lyman was. Rock solid. Hard working. Principled. Sober. Intellectually curious. Observant. Reasonable. Self-reliant. Upright. Helpful. Stable. Handsome. Knowledgeable. Sociable. Logical. Self-controlled. Collector of seeds. Feeder of birds. Cook and bottle washer. Teacher. Clean cut. Active. Well spoken. Sensible. Musical. Traditional. Fatherly. Patient. Lover of nature and animals, and of course BASKETBALL. Family man. Lyman was married to Shirley Ann (Feldhaus) for 49 years. Amy, Steven, and Stuart were their children. Renee Roll, Bryce and Blake Baumgart, their GRANDchildren. Love, forgiveness, and many shared common interests held Lyman and Shirley’s marriage together, especially in April of 2020 when Amy died. Stuart was Lyman’s around the clock caregiver and best companion in the last three years. They shared a special bond of love. Amy was a delight to Lyman. Amy made us a family, she was first. Amy became an All American cross country and track runner at USI. She gave us 2 wonderful GRANDsons. Steve and his daughter brought their strong Christian faith into our lives. They also brought lovely, memorable, and good gifts on birthdays and holidays. He spent 39 years of his working life at Whirlpool to support us. There he advocated for a non-smoking work environment starting in 1986. He served his country in the Army reserve. Lyman spent every day with the idea of making a difference in the world for good, in small and/or large ways. Anyone who knew Lyman will never forget him. Anyone who loved Lyman will always cherish him and love him. We praise Jesus for Lyman. Lyman knew and loved Him as his Savior. At 9:05 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Lyman joined Jesus in heaven where he was also reunited with Amy. Lyman was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Amy Lynn Wallis; and brothers, Larry and Jon Roll. He is survived by his wife Shirley; sons, Steven Gregory Roll and Stuart Alan Roll; grandchildren, Renee Brooke Roll, Bryce Donovan Baumgart, Blake Daniel Baumgart; sister, Janice Johnson; brother, James Roll (Helen); sister, Cheri Simmons; brother, Kevin Roll; sister, Kathi Duncan; and many nieces and nephews. At this time there be no visitation or funeral service. The family hopes to have a double celebration for the lives of Amy and Lyman at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to The Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410 or PBS at www.wnin.org.
