Norman L. Stack, Jr. November 20. 1933 – June 16, 2018 (84 years old) Grandparents Rev. Elijah Leroy Stack — Dora Belle Lawrence Henry Haywood King — Julia Francis Hood Parents Norman Leroy Stack — Margaret Etta King Married to Beatriz de Greiff Children Carol Margaret Stack Ingrid Christine Stack — Teri Lehner Grandchild Calder Louis Stack Norman, Jr. (Jim) was born in Greensboro, NC at the hospital/clinic owned and operated by his Great Aunt, Cora Lawrence Anthony, the twin sister of his grandmother, Dora Belle Lawrence Stack. It was the height of the depression, and the banks had been closed by President Roosevelt. Norman, Sr. had been working at a bank. When Jim was born, Norman was working as a teacher in Norlina, NC. (Jim was called Jim by Haywood who wanted to name him after his brother Jim, and it avoided confusion by having two Normans in the family). Jim spent his infancy on the 100 acre farm owned by Haywood on Creek Ridge Road in Greensboro NC. Jim's mother, Margaret, and his Grandmother King also lived there. He was joined by his baby brother, Franklin Carr Stack, on April 14, 1936. Frank was named for Haywood's brother Frank who lived in St. Louis, MO. Jim spent the next few years with family as Norman, Sr. joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. (CCC) as Education Adviser and an instructor. He served at Mars Hill, Gastonia, and Cherryville. Jim attended the first and second grade at Cherryville, NC. He spent the remaining years of public school in Charlotte schools. He went to Dilworth Elementary School, Alexander Graham Junior HS, and Central HS. Norman had been employed as a teacher and coach at Tech HS for the year 1942-1943. He worked at the shell plant as a CEO in 1943-1945. (He had a law degree from Duke). After the war, Norman Sr. worked as an adjudicator with the Veterans Administration. Jim earned an associates degree at Charlotte College, which was a two-year college meeting in the basement of Central HS at night. Jim went to the U. of MD in College Park, graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1957. He then joined the Air Force where he scored 100% on their test, the only person to do so. Jim served as a Sanitary Engineer at Lockbourne AFB in Columbus, Ohio. He took graduate courses at Ohio State University in Nuclear Engineering and Physics. He transferred overseas to AFB in Tripoli, Libya. He used that as a jumping off point to tour Europe and Egypt and the Middle East. He left the Air Force and returned to his job as a Patent Examiner that he got before he joined the Air Force. Jim lived at the York apartments in DC on 20th Street near George Washington University (GWU) in Foggy Bottom. He went to night school and earned a law degree from GWU. Then he moved to Northern Virginia when the Patent Office moved to Crystal City. He lived in River House in Arlington for a few years and then moved to Crystal City. Jim married Beatriz de Greiff in December 1971 at Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown. The reception was held in the party room on the roof of Jim's apartment building. They honeymooned in Hawaii, and they moved to the Buchanan House in Crystal City. Jim and Beatriz moved to their house in McLean in 1973. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters. Caroline was born on January 28, 1974, and Ingrid on March 18, 1976. After twenty years in the Patent Office, Jim went to work with NAVSHIPS located in Crystal City as an engineer. Jim worked for the U.S. Government for 43 years. Jim ended his Federal career when he retired from NAVSHIPS and continued to work with Beatriz in their law practice. His hobbies were writing, storytelling, reading and traveling. He was a good communicator who had a special talent for resolving problems. He was a true believer of the good news of Jesus Christ; “That whosoever believeth in me shall have eternal life”...John 3:16. We should be thankful for the time that Jim spent on this Earth with us. We should rejoice that all is well with his soul. I'm hopeful that Jim is communing with his fellow believers and visiting with family, friends, and pets. God bless you all. ...Frank Stack
