Obituary of Joann W. Groth
Celebration of Joann Wehrenberg Groth Let us celebrate and remember with thanksgiving what God has done through his faithful servant Joann Wehrenberg Groth. Joann (nee Wehrenberg) Groth was born on June 20, 1923, in Fort Wayne, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (nee Sandkuhler) Wehrenberg. On July 8, 1923, she was baptized. On March 21, 1937, she publicly confessed her baptismal faith in the rite of Confirmation and received the gift of the Lord’s life-giving body and blood. On January 21, 1948, she married her beloved husband, Earl Groth and was married for 46 years. She is survived by her brother Dave (Janet) Wehrenberg, sister Joyce Wehrenberg Geroff, sisters in law Beverly Wehrenberg Maxfield and Mary Ann Wehrenberg, daughter Julie (Jim) Edwards and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews who loved her very much. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Earl in 1994 and her son John in 1993 as well by her brothers Henry and Tom Wehrenberg, nephew Mark Wehrenberg and brother in law Bill Geroff. Joann was a registered nurse with the Fort Wayne Lutheran Hospital. She enjoyed running a business with her husband Earl Groth for many years at John Earl Ladies Apparel Stores in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Van Wert, Defiance, and Bryan, Ohio. Joann enjoyed entertaining family and friends, cooking, knitting, gardening, beekeeping, reading, doing volunteer work and traveling the world. She enjoyed spending summers at her second home on Manitoulin Island, Canada. She welcomed many into her home and always had an open chair, a good meal and friendly conversation for those that gathered at her table in the country kitchen. She was a mother and caregiver to many, especially her sister Joyce. Joann and Earl were long time active members of Ascension Lutheran Church since October 31, 1983. She was a member of the Cedar Creek Women’s Club and various committees. On September 25, 2020, Joann was called home to rest in the arms of Jesus. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord. We give thanks to God our Father through Jesus Christ, our Lord, for our faithful servant Joann!
