OBITUARY

Mary Katherine Wormcastle

August 12, 1948October 8, 2020

Mary Katherine Wormcastle, 72, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2020. She was born to the late John William and Louise (Hicks) Cornell Sr. in Louisville, KY on August 12, 1948. She will be missed every day by her husband, Joseph A. Wormcastle, who was the only one who called her “Mary” - and then only on certain occasions. To her many, many friends she was “Katy.” And boy did she have friends! They were drawn to her sharp mind which allowed her to see to the heart of any issue, her warm smile and hearty laugh and to the trait she was best known for – her loyalty. She stood by her friends through thick and thin. One of her friends, upon learning of her passing, said, “She always made me feel good about myself.” That is so true!

And oh, how she doted on her family. Katy and Joe were not just an example of a good marriage, they were partners in all things; whether it was going to the races or to the beaches it is difficult to think of one without the other – again her loyalty shone like the brightest moon. She showed her love for her son Peter J. (Lisa A.) Wormcastle and her granddaughter, Mary Wormcastle by never failing to be there when they needed a loving shoulder to lean on.

Katy was a respected technician before retiring from the Fort Wayne Police Department after many years of loyal service. She was known to the officers and “brass” alike as someone they could count on to get it right.

She is also survived by her brother, Archie Cornell of Springfield, OH; sisters, Elizabeth Byron of Louisville, KY, Susan Garr Pohl of Louisville, KY and Louise E. Gabriel of Chicago, IL. She was preceded in death by her brother, John William Cornell Jr.

Upon Mary's wishes there will be no services.

A favorite memory was the love they shared with my two small children. One night I came home (kids were with a babysitter), I discovered a new addition to the family- a kitten! Katie felt the kids needed a kitten! A happy surprise, and the kitten was probably the best pet we ever had! Katie’s warm smile and hearty laugh will be missed.

Katy was loved by our family. Katy was such a caring person and loyal friend. Our two oldest have great memories of Katy inviting them over to swim. They love talking about how nice she was to them and how much fun they had under her watchful eye. I loved sitting with her over their dining room table, drinking coffee and talking over the issues of the day. She was honest, smart and knowledgeable about many things. I am glad I had the opportunity to do that one more time.
Katy was a wonderful wife and mother. She cared deeply for Joe, Pete and granddaughter Mary. She loved to share her pride in how smart and independent Mary is! Katy, we miss you.

I am sorry to read of Katie's passing. I will always hold fond memories of days gone by when racing not only in Fort Wayne, but the time I spent in Florida one year. Peace be with her Family and Friends. God Bless and Keep you in your time of sorrow.

It is so very sad to hear about Katie. I would have thought she had a job or existing relatives that are left behind. Katie was such a giving person. She lived next door to my Aunt Rosie for many years and they became friends. Katie was a wonder friend and helper to Rosie. She would share her meals with her and deliver them to Rosie even though Katie herself was sick. She was always going with Rosie to the store or just sitting out in the yard or house and talking and enjoying each other. Katie loved her grand daughter who lived in Indianapolis and she would always tell us things that were going on with her granddaughter. Katie was a very kind, caring person and I am thankful to have known her even though not nearly enough. Prayers to her family
