Harry Haskell Hergert

Harry Haskell Hergert, Sr. was born October 15, 1919 in San Francisco, California, to Russell and Alberta Hergert. He was an only child and was quite intelligent. He went to The University of California at Berkeley and received a Bachelors of Science Degree in 1941. He proceeded to attend Harvard University and received a Degree of Master in Business Administration in 1947. He met his wife Nancy Keene there. They were married and lived in Darien, Connecticut. They had three children, Harry Jr., Nancy, known as Muffin, and William. Harry was an eccentric person who was very interested in antiques. When he bought a historical monument, a home built in 1776 on 2 acres with a clay tennis court, his dreams became a reality. He lived in the same home for 50 years. Tennis became his favorite past time. He and his wife played doubles with another couple. They would play a tournament every year and had a trophy made. Each year they would engrave the names of the winning couple. He felt he had everything he could possibly want. Harry worked for American Electric Power as a comptroller for his entire career, in New York City, and commuted on the train every day until he retired. On a personal level he was unique in that he was primarily a vegetarian and loved sea food. He loved working in New York City because of the variety of food venues he could enjoy, Indian and Thai foods being his favorite. His interest in international countries resulted in his family travelling to Europe many times, because they loved the museums, culture and ambiance it offered, especially Venice, Harrys’ favorite place in the world. He lost his beloved wife to cancer in 1987. After living alone in Darien for many years he decided to move to Virginia in 1995. He would be closer to his daughter in law, Susan Stonehill. He gave her the ultimate complement of trust that she, with help from her daughters Tamis and Carissa, would help care for him. In July of 2005 he moved into Chancellors Village Retirement Community. While he was not happy at first, he grew to be very comfortable there. He passed away on November 8, 2012. He was 93 years old. He was remembered as a kind man who was very grateful for the care and attention he received. He valued the simple things in life and was independent in spirit. He will be missed. Harry H. Hergert is survived by his daughter Nancy Hurd, 7 grandchildren, Tamis Davis, Carissa Hergert, Jacqueline Hergert, Lisa Walker, Tina Delawter, Bo Hurd and Brooks Hurd. He is also survived by 6 great grandchildren, Calen Cooper, Lourdes and Madeline Davis, Kendra Delawter and Boden & Myles Walker.
