Lawrence Daniel Smith

Lawrence Daniel Smith, 87, of Greencastle passed away Monday, July 8, 2019, at Asbury Towers. Lawrence was born in Marion County on July 23, 1931, the son of Denton C. and Ethel Ann (Brown) Smith, and was a graduate of Danville High School. Mr. Smith Served proudly in the United States Army for 20 years. He retired as a Staff Sergeant in 1968. He served 14 1/2 years of overseas duty in Japan, Korea, Panama and Germany. After retiring from the Army Lawrence worked 23 more years with Greencastle Community Schools, until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of Hanna Street Baptist Church, where he served many years as a trustee, the American Legion Post #58, and was a member-at-Large in the VFW. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Doris Marie (O’Hair) Smith; two sons, Daniel R. Smith, (wife-Vickie), Greencastle, and Scott W. Smith, (wife-Jennifer), Valdez, Alaska; six grandchildren, Tony Smith, (wife-Judith), New Whiteland, Rachel Smith, (husband-Brad), Greencastle, Becky Fickes, (husband-Brian), Valdez, Alaska, Jason Smith, (Crystal), Jasonville, Joshua Smith, (wife-Jamie), Springfield, Louisiana, and Nicole Rivers, (Damon), Greencastle; a brother, Robert L. Smith, Spencer; 16 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Clifford Smith, William Smith and James R. Smith and a sister, Alice Scott. Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with Pastor Patrick Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Brick Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2019, and one hour prior to time of service on Saturday.
