Mary Fern Hayes

Mary Fern Hayes, 87, of Greencastle passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Putnam County Hospital. Mary was born in Belle Union, on March 18, 1931, the daughter of Oscar William and Martha Ellen (Blanton) Petrey, and attended Belle Union School. Mrs. Hayes worked for 19 years at P.R. Mallory. She was a member of Hanna Street Baptist Church. Mary enjoyed flower gardening, pitching horse shoes, and loved spending time with her family. Survivors include a son, Gerald Dee Hayes, (wife-Shirley); two daughters, Judith Lynn Smith, and Krista Ellen Smith, (husband-Michael); 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 44 years, Phillip Tarcus Hayes; a son Phillip Terrell Hayes; a grandson, Matthew Hayes; two brothers and two sisters. Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 20, 2018, at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home with Pastor Patrick Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
