William Herbert (Bill) Hunter, of Greensburg, passed away September 6, 2013, at Decatur County Memorial Hospital. He was 94 years old. Born February 18, 1919, he was the son of Herbert C. and Florine (Meek) Hunter. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Day Hunter; daughters Helen (Patrick) Mills of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mollie Hunter of Miami, Fla.; sons Herbert (Julia) Hunter, Greensburg, and Thomas (Lisa) Hunter of Yorktown, Va. He is also survived by six grandsons, and one granddaughter. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps, spending most of the war on Kwajalein Island, part of the Marshall Islands. He continued his service after the war in the Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1979, at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. For many years, he gave the annual Memorial Day address at South Park Cemetery as a proud member of our local American Legion Post. Following graduation from both Indiana University and the Indiana Pharmaceutical College (now Butler University), he joined his father and brother, Oliver Hunter, in business together as Hunter Pharmacy. In 1957, it was a staple on the North Side of the Greensburg Square and continued as such for many years. Very community minded, Bill served as a City Councilman-At-Large for 18 years, was a past chairman of the Decatur County Republican party, a member of both the American Legion and the Rotary Club for over fifty years, a past-president of the Chamber of Commerce and he served on the organizing committees for the Decatur County Community Foundation and the Big Blue Booster Club. He was also an elder in the First Presbyterian Church. For his work in the community, Bill received the Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award and the Stephen Decatur Society Award from the Decatur County Community Foundation. Per Bill’s request, his body has been donated to the Anatomical Education Program of Indiana University. A celebration of his life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 14, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Bob McAulay officiating. Friends and family are invited to attend. The family requests memorial contributions to be made to the Decatur County Community Foundation, or charity of their choice. The family would also like to express their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Morning Breeze Nursing and Retirement Facility for the loving care and kindness extended to Bill during his stay.
