Robert Leon Hoggard

Robert Leon Hoggard, 86, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2016. He was born on a farm In Bertie County, North Carolina. Leon and Louise Jernigan were married from 1948 until her passing in 2007. Leon was just a country boy who left the farm looking for a better life for his young family. Leon and Louise moved to Hampton, Virginia in 1952 and he started working at the Newport News Ship Yard in 1952. After a 38 year career, he retired in 1988. After retirement, Leon enjoyed good health into his 80’s. He enjoyed a good days work including gardening, cutting firewood and working around his church. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church for more than 30 years and was a man of great faith. Leon was preceded in rest by his wife of 59 years, Louise Hoggard. He is survived by his daughters, Jewel Covey and husband Larry, Ann Tanner and husband Barry, and Edna Chittum and husband David; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and sister, Emaline Baker. A celebration of Leon’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Grace Baptist Church with Dr. David Luethy presiding. Interment will follow Parklawn Memorial Park.
