Kathryn "Kay" Amburn Haraughty

Londa Kathryn (Kay) Amburn Haraughty of Harrisonburg, formerly of Amherst, died April 25, 2019 at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center in Harrisonburg, VA. Mrs. Haraughty was born August 15, 1932 in Hollis, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late Jack Amburn and Ethel Hames Amburn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, John E. Haraughty, Jr., a sister, Mae Grooms, and a brother, Edmund Amburn. Kay spent her life raising her family and working in the secretarial field. Her last position, prior to retirement, was as an executive secretary at Old Dominion Job Corps in Monroe. She was also a devoted and supportive pastor’s wife. She worked tirelessly beside her husband through his career. The Haraughty’s moved to Amherst in 1969 when John became pastor of St. Paul’s Episcopal Mission. Kay and John deeply loved the congregation and they quickly became like family. She will be remembered for her kind nature and generous heart. She is survived by three children, John Elwin Haraughty III (Karen), of Tulsa, OK, Susan Haraughty Koch (Michael) of Harrisonburg, VA, and Patrick Kevin Haraughty of Mt. Olive, NC. In addition, she is survived by one sister, Julia Gant, of Oklahoma City, OK, seven grandchildren: Rebecca, Christopher, David, Michael, Brian, Matthew, Kathryn, and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. At the time of her death, she was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Amherst. She remained a faithful friend of St. Paul Church, the Bear Mountain Community, and the Monacan Nation. A celebration of Kay’s life will be held June 15, 2019 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul Episcopal Church, 815 Kenmore Rd, Amherst, VA with Rev. Don Moore officiating.
