Doris Jean Wampler, age 96, of Griffith, IN passed away peacefully in her residence at Bickford of Crown Point on Wednesday, April 11, 2018. Born May 28, 1921, she was the third child born to the late Frederic Beisal and Helga Elizabeth (Thieman) Castle. Doris lived in Chicago, IL and Whiting, IN until she moved to Griffith and lived for 62 years, where she raised her family. Doris was the consummate Christian wife, homemaker and mother to her 5 children. She dedicated her life to their growth and well-being, having been widowed twice (Woody, WWII fatality and Esco from cancer) in her early life. She showed amazing strength, perseverance, and resolve to keep her children together and provide them a rich, full life. She succeeded!! A great listener and doer, Doris enjoyed sharing her compassion, quick wit, culinary talents, gardening expertise and knitting skills with all she knew. She managed a house full of kids with grace and love. Known for her cooking and baking she was always sharing and caring for others. She had the uncanny ability to sense when others needed some sunshine and she was quick to provide it. Doris was a generous, hard working woman who gave of herself to many causes including: First Christian Church, Griffith’s Woman’s Club, American Cancer Ass’n, and Griffith Gardening Club. She volunteered often, always with gladness knowing she was helping others in need. Doris was known for her honesty, loyalty and love for GOD, Country and Family. She led by example and followed the “Golden Rule.” Doris worked outside her home in retail, manufacturing and hospital dietary. She retired from Franciscan St. Margaret’s Hospital in 1992. Her love and dedication expanded to guide 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews and their families. Doris influenced 5 generations, a remarkable person who will be missed by all, yet her teachings will continue to mold her family. Those proceeding her in death include her parents, (Frederic & Elizabeth) 2 brothers (Harry, WWII fatality and Bud), one sister (Tootsie), one daughter (Sandra Price Davis) and two beloved husbands and fathers to her children: Woodrow Price, Nov. 1944 and Esco Maurice Wampler, July 1961. Survivors include her dearest sister: Frances Dorris; Doris’s four children: Claude Wampler, Hilton Head Island, SC, Cheryl Shinabarger (Edward), Fort Wayne, IN, Paula Satkamp (Gary), Brevard, NC and Deborah Shahpar , Chicago, IL; thirteen grandchildren: Dawn, Craig, Michelle, Jason, Aaron, Andrew, Matthew, Sally, Jasmine, Adam, Jena, Bizhan and Armon. A funeral celebrating the life of Doris Wampler will be held Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road (two blocks south of Ridge Road) Highland, IN with Chaplain Michael Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Gary, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family Saturday, April 14, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (time of service) at the funeral home.
