Gary L. Wilson, age 84, of Griffith, IN passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Joyce L. Wilson; his parents: Frank and Flossie Wilson; and his brother, R. Larry Wilson. Gary is survived by his two daughters: Pamela (Rob) Campbell Gorski of Crown Point, IN and Debra Wilson of Pewaukee, WI; grandchildren: Lori (Todd) Baker of Crown Point, IN, Davina (Hector) Cordero of West Allis, WI, Stephanie (Ray) Dixon of Pewaukee, WI, and Richard Wilson of Milwaukee, WI; six great grandchildren: Alex, Marque, William, Leah, Emmalee, and Kailyn. Gary was born in Emporia, KS and attended eight different grade schools, ranging from a one-room schoolhouse outside Joplin, MO to big-city schools in New York City, Pontiac, MI, and Dayton, OH. He began work selling newspapers on the subways in New York when he was seven years old. Gary delivered Western Union notifications during World War II on his bicycle and 21 other jobs until graduating from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He worked in the field of television broadcasting in Ashtabula, OH and then came to Gary, IN where he was a newscaster, news director, and talk show host at stations WGRY, WWCA and WJOB. He was also a newspaper reporter for the Times and public relations director for NIPSCO. After retirement, Gary continued his writing career and he enjoyed his family, photography and 76,000 miles of bicycling across the USA. Honoring Gary's wishes, there will be no funeral service or visitation. A memorial luncheon and celebration of his life for his family and friends will be held at an upcoming date. Cremation services are entrusted to Kuiper Funeral Home. Memorial contributions in Gary's name may be made to the Griffith Historical Society or a charity of your choice. www.kuiperfh.com
