Obituary of Eileen D. "Susie" St. John
Born Wednesday, December 18, 1929, Eileen Dorothy St. John passed comfortably on Sunday Jan. 17, 2021. She is preceded in death by her parents, Eva and Michael, her brothers Francis and William, and sister Ethel. Eileen never married and is survived by her nieces, nephews and their families. Eileen was born and lived in the “Dutchtown” neighborhood of Rochester, NY. She attended Holy Family Parochial School, and Nazareth Academy. In 1951 she graduated from the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Elmira, New York. In 1952, Eileen responded to the American Red Cross call for nurses to help with the polio outbreak. She was assigned a temporary position in the Iron Lung unit of IU hospital Indianapolis. In 1959 Eileen accepted a position at Methodist hospital where she started as a pediatrics nurse. Eileen advanced in the pediatrics area caring for infants and toddlers and eventually was promoted to Nursing Manager and Head Nurse in the Children’s Pavilion. Retiring in 1992, Eileen spent her remaining years caring for children, reading, gardening, loving her dogs and enjoying time with friends. Eileen’s family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Cumberland Pointe Health Campus for the care and support of Eileen during her two plus years in residence. In lieu of flowers, donations in Eileen’s name may be made to Cumberland Pointe Health Campus, 1051 Cumberland Avenue, West Lafayette ,Indiana 47906 or to the charity of your choosing. A memorial service for Eileen will be held at Leppert Mortuary, 740 East 86th St., Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday morning, August 7th. Friends can gather beginning at 9:00 am for coffee and pastry. A memorial service, expected to last an hour will be held, and live streamed in Leppert’s chapel beginning about 10:00. An internet link for the live-stream will be accessible via Eileen’s obituary at: www.leppertmortuary.com Eileen’s family and friends will gather at St. Theodore’s Church, Rochester, NY on Wednesday August, 11 at 9:30am to celebrate the Mass and Catholic funeral liturgy. Interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Rochester, NY will immediately follow the Mass.
