G. Vance Smith, Jr., 78, passed away on February 22,2009. A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, he graduated from Shortridge High School and Wesleyan University (Connecticut) and served in the U.S. Army.
Vance spent his entire working life in the advertising, public relations and marketing areas beginning with Central Advertising Agency, Standard Life Insurance Co. of Indiana and the Indianapolis Star from which he retired in 1998.
He was president of the Advertising Club of Indianapolis - the first son of a former Ad Club president. He received the Ad Club's "Ad Man of the Year" in 1972.
He was an Eagle Scout, a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, member of Advertising Review Board of the Better Business Bureau of Indianapolis and the Woodstock Club. He served on numerous board of directors including Englishton Park, Civic Theatre, Visiting Nurse Association and Westminster Foundation.
Vance was a lifelong member of Second Presbyterian Church where he was an ordained deacon and former elder.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Virginia Reavis Smith; daughter, Cynthia Ann (J. Edwin) Bolander; son, Jeffrey Vance Smith; sister, Hodgie (Harry) Rybolt and three grandchildren, Brendan James, Megan Nicole and Nicholas Samuel Bolander.
There will be a memorial service for Vance, Thursday, February 26 at Second Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Friends may visit with the family from 9 to 11 a.m. preceding the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Meridian Street, 46260 or to a charity of their choice.
