Obituary of Nella Mae Padfield
Nella Mae Padfield, 75, of Greentown, passed away at 2:32 PM Sunday June 16, 2019, at her residence. Born August 14, 1943, in Gainesboro, TN, she was the daughter of the late John and Nella (Stewart) Coons. She was a 1961 graduate of Wendell Welke High School, received an Associate's Degree from Indiana University Kokomo (IUK), a B.S. Summa Cum Laude and M.S. from Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU). On June 8, 1979 in Kokomo, she married Rodney K. Padfield. She was employed with Delphi for over 30 years, retiring in 2001. She volunteered with the Historical Society in Greentown; also the Literacy Coalition in Kokomo and Tipton. She was a member of the IUK and IWU Alumni Associations, UAW Local 292, US Humane Society and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She endowed the Ernest B. Johnson Memorial Scholarship at IUK in memory of son, Ernie Johnson who died on November 1, 1989. Mae was a special person who put everyone’s feelings and welfare above her own. She cherished time spent with family and friends. She deeply believed in education and family values. The time spent with family and especially when she was able to be with her great-grandchildren would spark a light within, causing her beautiful smile to shine bright. Anytime anyone would ask her how she was feeling, her response would be fine even though she was in pain. She gave her final breath after 13 years of courageously fighting cancer with her husband holding her hand. She will always be loved and remembered for the love, generosity, and kindness, she shown to all. Survivors include her husband of 40 years Rodney K. Padfield of Greentown; one daughter Shelly Johnson of Kokomo; one step-daughter Amber (Matt) Hutson of Cicero; two sisters Annette Crouch and Wanda Shockley both of Kokomo; two brothers Joe (Bobbie) Coons of Kokomo and Jeff (Cindy) Coons of Elwood; one grandson Michael (Melissa) Williams of Brownsburg; three great grandchildren Kenton, Maven and Mivea Williams of Brownsburg; special friend Darlene James. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son Ernest Johnson; four sisters Marie Shields, Joyce, Barbara and Judith Edith Coons; one brother John Coons Jr. Memorial services will be Monday June 24, 2019, at 1:00pm at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 South Webster Street, Kokomo.
