Obituary of Hardy Shelburne Campbell
Hardy Shelburne Campbell, 90 of 257 Ziglar Road, Ridgeway, died Monday, January 14, 2013 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, NC. He was born in Patrick County, December 26, 1922 to Thomas Jefferson Campbell and Clarice Mabel Martin Campbell. He graduated from Spencer-Penn High School and served in the Navy during WWII where he took part in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. He retired from Campbell Transmission Service where he was owner/operator for over 30 years. Hardy was a member of the Dixie Racing Circuit and the Virginia-Carolina Early Dirt Racers Association. He was a member of Horsepasture Christian Church and also a member of the choir for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Betsy Gray Campbell; three sisters, Pauline C. Josefson, Doris C. Maddox and Jeanette C. Joyce; three brothers, Thomas W. Campbell, Jamie F. Campbell and Wayne H. Campbell. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Alpha Freeman Campbell of the residence; one son, Joseph B. (Joey) Campbell of Ridgeway; two grandchildren, Sara Campbell McKinney and Parker Gray Campbell; one sister, Glenda C. Mays of Ridgeway; two brothers, Ernest M. Campbell of Ridgeway and Connie D. Campbell of Martinsville. The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Horsepasture Christian Church with ministers, David Cuthbertson and Robert Ashby officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors by the Martinsville-Henry Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Horsepasture Christian Church and other times at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to Horsepasture Christian Church Mission’s Fund, 1146 Horsepasture-Price Road, Ridgeway, VA 24148.
