Obituary of June Greene Grider
June G. Grider, 85, was born in Wakulla, Florida to Eula B. and Tom Green. June passed away on November 14, 2018 in her North Chesterfield, Va. residence after an extended struggle with dementia. June is survived by her husband of 64 years, Arnold Douglas Grider, a son, Timothy Douglas Grider, and many loved ones, including four grandchildren. June had two brothers, two sisters and a son, Thomas Allen Grider, that preceded her in death. June attended elementary school in Woodville, Florida, high school in Tallahassee (Leon High School) and a year at Florida State University. June always appreciated the quality of her education, particularly the excellent teachers at Leon High School. After graduation from high school in 1951, June worked at various accounting jobs, including General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC). There she developed a love for accounting that was to stay with her throughout her adult life. June married Doug Grider, June 1954, in the Wakulla Methodist Church. The couple immediately moved to the New York City area where June worked with GMAC in Patterson, New Jersey. The stay in the New York City area ended in November 1955 when Doug was drafted, and in April 1956, commissioned as an officer in the US Navy. The couple spent two years in the Washington, DC area, six month in Pittsburgh and five years in Idaho Falls, Idaho. During that time June had two sons. Allen was born in Maryland and Tim was born in Idaho. In June 1963, June and her family moved back to the Washington, DC area. After a short stay in a townhouse in Fairfax, they moved to a new home in Vienna, Va in 1964 where they would reside until 1991. While in Vienna, June finished her accounting studies at the University of Virginia extension in Northern Virginia. After her sons were old enough to drive, June went to work in the accounting firm of Thompson and Greenspun in Fairfax, Virginia for eight years. In 1991, June retired and she and Doug moved to the Ophelia/Burgess Va. area. In 2015, they moved to North Chesterfield and resided there until her passing. June was beautiful and intelligent. At the same time she was gentle, humble and down to earth. She had a wonderful sense of humor. She didn’t judge others. June wasn’t a saint. She was tough as nails and could be very forceful, especially if she thought something or someone was unfair or violating the standard the Lord gave us all. In her house, “if Momma ain’t happy, nobody’s happy!” June loved her family dearly, especially her mother and sister, Rachel. Whenever June said “Home”, she meant where her mother was. In her declining years, whenever she needed help, she would call for her sister Rachel. In raising her sons, she tried to give them roots and wings. She taught them to respect others, no matter who or what they were. She showered her grandchildren with a gentle, constant love. Wherever June lived, she was active in her church. She was a treasurer in the Idaho Falls, Idaho and Vienna, Va., Methodist churches. In addition, she was active in the church women’s groups and the choirs. She particularly enjoyed direct outreach such as Meal on Wheels, Adult Education and helping mothers with children and victims of abuse or neglect. June always reached out to those in need whoever they were, wherever she was and as much as she could. June’s interests were her family, helping others, reading, accounting, and needle work such as cross stitch, tatting and quilting. She loved people and found loving, warm hearted, friendly people wherever she happened to be. She formed many friendships over the years, some lasting for decades. Though she is no longer with us, she lives on in the memories of her family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2:00 p.m. at The Brandermill Church, 4500 Millridge Parkway, Midlothian, Va. 23112. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Brandermill Church.
