Obituary of Lucy Conrad Earle
Lucy Messick Earle Mrs. Earle, widow of John Burns Earle, Jr., formerly of Front Royal, Virginia, died on October 3, 2012, in Richmond, Virginia. She was born at “Chesloma” in Irvington, Virginia on September 29, 1924, the daughter of the late Walter White Messick and Ethel Conrad Messick. She was a graduate of Longwood College and instead of teaching school she worked for Mr. L. Damon Gasque, Superintendent of the Warren and Rappahannock Public School System, for many years. She raised her family at “Mount Zion farm” in Warren County, her husband’s historical home built in 1771 and listed on the National Register of Historical places. When her children started school, she was asked to work for the Division of War Veterans Claims, a position that she held until her retirement from the State of Virginia. Mrs. Earle moved to Richmond in 1988, a year after the death of her husband, and the subsequent sale of (Mount Zion). She was a member of the Bon Air Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Virginia, and a former member and Elder of Nineveh Presbyterian Church in Front Royal, Virginia. She was also a member of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Virginia Historical Society, the National Trust of Historical Preservation, the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and a former member of Willow Oaks Country Club. She is survived by a daughter, Ms. Roberta (Robbie) Earle Rowe of Richmond, two sons, John Burns Earle, III, and his wife, Karen of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Samuel Gardner Earle, and his wife, Janice of Wardensville, West Virginia, six grandsons, John Burns Earle, IV, of Harrisonburg, Justin Alexander Earle, and wife, Kaitlin of Maysville, West Virginia, Chase Tyler Earle and Austin Conor Earle of Wardensville, Forrest Peyton Rowe and Fletcher Andrew Rowe of Richmond, and two grand-daughters, Madison Rebecca Earle of Wardensville, and Sarah Kathlyn Earle of Harrisonburg. She is a great-grandmother of McKenna Emmalee Earle of Maysville, West Virginia. She was predeceased by a brother, Walter White (Bill) Messick of Southport, Connecticut. She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Richard Dean (Ethel) Rhodes, of Richmond, five nieces, and two nephews. Mrs. Earle resided at Chesterfield Heights in Midlothian, Virginia. Visitation will be on Friday, October 5, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Hugenot Chapel, 1020 West Hugenot Road, Midlothian, Virginia 23113. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Bon Air Presbyterian Church, 9201 West Hugenot Road, Richmond, VA 23235. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
