Obituary of Robert Leo Hurley
Hurley, Robert “Bob” L., of Mechanicsville and Williamsburg, died Friday, July 5, 2013 at 88. He was preceded in death by his wife Anne N. Hurley and son Rob Hurley. He is survived by daughters Jane Swan (Chris), Trish Fulcher and Susan Everett (Mike); grandchildren Mac Swan, Allie White (Dustin) and Sheridan Fulcher; great grandchildren Hayden Everett and Audrey White; and longtime companion “Frankie” Bruce. He retired as editor of Army Trainer magazine, where he received the Meritorious Medal for Performance, and the “Blue Pencil” and Keith L. Ware awards. Before that he was a senior associate professor at St. Leo College; corporate director of public relations for Dow Badische Co.; in public relations with what is now Exxon Corp; and city editor of the Danville Register. Bob held offices and memberships in the local United Way Fund, the Williamsburg Rotary Club, Navy League, several press/ public relations societies, and helped organize the first Occasion of the Arts event. During WWII he served in the Navy in a night torpedo bomber squadron aboard the aircraft carriers Kula Gulf and Block Island. He earned a BA from UVA, where he was on the soccer, baseball and boxing teams and an MS from Boston University. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday July 12, 2013 at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church, 7356 Atlee Rd.
