Wilbert J. "Chillie" Childress Sr.
November 3, 1928 – November 13, 2013

CHILDRESS, Sr., Wilbert “Chillie,” 85, of Sandston, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. He was the son of the late Ada and Ray Childress. Chillie was a well-known and respected brick mason and custom builder establishing W. J. Childress, Inc. in 1975. Chillie was a member of New Bridge Baptist Church and long term member of Windsor Club of Elko. He was a Korean War Veteran. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha Lee Childress; children, Wilbert “Bert” Childress, Jr. (Cathy), Steven Childress (Rachel), and Jean Garrett (Peter); five grandchildren, Brian Childress (Erica), Shannon Wakefield (Kyle), Sarah Henderson (John), Casey Garrett, Peter Garrett II; two great-grandsons, John and Steven Henderson; sister, Thelma Freeman; brother, Linwood Childress (Barbara); and twin sister, Edna McClenny. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2013 and from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Richmond, Va. 23231. A funeral service will be held at New Bridge Baptist Church, 5701 Elko Rd., on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Bridge Baptist Church building fund.
