Mary Nelle Evans, 81, of Annandale, VA, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2018. She was preceded in death by her son, David P. Hatcher, Jr., and her parents, Edna Culvahouse Evans and Frank Clifford Evans. She is survived by her brother, David C. Evans, and his partner, Sharon Griffith; her sister Reba Wheeler; and her sister and brother-in-law, Edna and David Carlton; her daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Diane and Charles Hines, and Gretchen and Stephen O’Brien, and her daughter Terrey Hatcher; her grandchildren David James, Joshua, and Jacob Hatcher; Carina Hines; Rachel Quindlen; and Connor, Dillon, and Bailey O’Brien; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Born April 6, 1937, she was valedictorian of her 1955 class at Rockwood High School. Her senior year, she earned the superlatives most ambitious, most likely to succeed, most studious, and most cooperative. As a guard on the Rockwood High School basketball team, she was named to the All Region team her senior year and earned the nickname “Murph.”
In her first year at East Tennessee State University, she received an award from Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity for the freshman with the highest GPA. She married one of those fraternity brothers, David P. Hatcher, Sr., and had four children. She also worked in the public information office at ETSU. Returning to college after her divorce and when her children were in school, she graduated cum laude from ETSU.
In her later years, she enjoyed family gatherings and watching the Washington Redskins. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ravensworth Baptist Church in Annandale, VA, or East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN.
