Jerry "Biggie" Earl Leitgabel

Jerry Earl “Biggie” Leitgabel, 83, of Rosedale, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 31, 1937, in Terre Haute to Earl and Josephine (Stultz) Leitgabel. He married Elizabeth Ione Mattox in May of 1957.
Jerry is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Ione Leitgabel of Rosedale; sons, Bob Leitgabel and wife Patti of Greensburg, Don Leitgabel of Terre Haute, and Jim Leitgabel and wife Anita of Terre Haute; a sister, Joy Johnstone of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald Leitgabel.
Jerry was a graduate of Fontanet High School and Ivy Tech Community College. He worked for many years as a supervisor at Hercules. Later, he ran the Rosedale Water and Sewage Treatment Facility and the West Terre Haute Sewage Treatment Facility.
An avid sports fan, Jerry loved to watch the Cubs, Bears, and Pacers. He coached baseball for many years for Rosedale Little League, North Terre Haute Little League All Star Teams, Connie Mack Baseball and Fast Pitch Softball. Jerry also raised and traded rabbits and pheasants. He loved to garden and had the one of the biggest gardens in Rosedale. Most of all, he cherished the time he spent with family and friends, especially his sons and grandchildren. He will be truly missed.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26 at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 27 at the funeral home with Rev. Bob Leitgabel officiating. Jerry will be laid to rest in Rosedale Cemetery. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mattoxwood.com
