Obituary of Myron Dale Rukes
Myron Dale Rukes, 93, of Rosedale, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at home, surrounded by his family. He was born on April 21, 1926, in Parke County to William and Edna (Petty) Rukes. Myron is survived by his children, Pam Williams and husband Joe of Terre Haute, Sherri Sullivan of Terre Haute, and Brad Rukes and wife Ruth of Rosedale; grandchildren, Matt Sullivan, Andy Williams and wife Jessica, and Kristi Barnaby and husband Erik; great-grandchildren, Lane Sullivan, Alexandra Barnaby, Kami Williams, Stella Barnaby, and Collin Williams; sister, Margaret Grunert; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Retha Maurine Rukes; twin brother, Marion Gale Rukes; brother, Lester Rukes; and sister, Dorothy Harrison. Myron graduated from Rosedale High School in 1944. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, he served aboard the LST 691 in the Pacific Theater of WWII. Myron was a member of VFW Post 972. He was an American Hero and a true patriot. A pipefitter by trade, Myron retired after a long career at Commercial Solvents. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to go hunting, fishing, and camping. He looked forward to spring and his annual birthday tradition of mushroom hunting with his family. He also loved to garden. Myron had a great sense of humor and loved to play pranks, especially April Fool’s jokes. He enjoyed going on vacation and going out to dinner. The Cracker Barrel was one of his favorite restaurants, not only for the food, but because he loved the staff that took care of him so well. Myron was a long-time member of Cross Lane Community Church. Myron was a devoted and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, affectionately called “PaPa” by the kids. When his grandson, Matt, was in an accident during his college years, Myron drove him to his classes for two years at Indiana University to make sure he achieved his dream of earning a college degree. His dedication to his grandson’s future earned Myron an Honorary Alumnus Degree in Public and Environmental Affairs from IU in Bloomington, which was especially fitting considering how big of a Hoosiers fan that he was. Myron always said, “I’ve had a great life, I wouldn’t change a thing.” A private graveside service will be held in Roselawn Memorial Park. A Celebration of Myron’s Life is being planned for a later date. Mattox-Wood Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Reach Veteran’s Services or the Indiana Department of Veteran’s Affairs. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mattoxwood.com
