Marvin Oakley Byrum

Marvin O. Byrum ,90 passed away on December 12, 2018. He leaves behind a daughter, Jeanette Rice and son David Byrum, 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He was devoted to his many friends and loved helping people. Marvin served in the US Coast Guard and later joined and retired from the city of Norfolk Fire Department. He loved the outdoors and was a skier, windsurfer, scuba diver and fisherman. He was a gymnast and in May of 1950 broke a record by walking down the steps of the Washington Monument on his hands in 41minutes and 30 seconds shattering the previous record of 1 hour and 25 minutes. Marvin loved to travel and recently returned from Germany where he shared his experiences as a fire fighter with a fire department team in the town of Schonberg Germany. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He will be dearly missed.
The family will greet friends on Monday December 17 at the Smith and Williams Funeral Home on Princess Anne Road from 2-4 pm
