Viola (Vi) Gustilo Aguda, 77, passed away on February 24, 2018. She was born in Gua-an, Leganes, IloIlo, Philippines on September 14, 1940.

Vi was preceded in death by her parents, Ireneo Gustilo and Felicisima Octaviano; and three sisters, Mildred, Edna, and Helene.

She graduated from IloIlo City College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She met her husband Amado when he was boarding in her grandfather’s house during her senior year in high school. They started communicating long-distance while she was in college and Amado departed to join the US Navy. After marrying in 1965, Vi remained in the Philippines while Amado deployed with the Navy. She and their two children eventually moved to Japan to join Amado where he was stationed. She worked in the Navy Exchange’s Loss Prevention department as an undercover “shopper” in Japan and in Norfolk before leaving to dedicate her efforts with the Red Cross, St Anthony Messenger, and several charitable organizations. A devout Roman Catholic with a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Vi volunteered most notably as a Nocturnal Adoration group leader at Saint Pius X Church, as a Perpetual Adoration volunteer at Christ the King Church, as a lector at Saint Gregory Church, as a leader of the holy rosary preceding Mass at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception, and in various roles at the Lady of Victory Chapel at the Norfolk Naval Base.

Vi loved gardening, sewing, crocheting, and animals. Throughout her life, she always had a pet or two (or more) to spoil. Vi was a repeat winner of neighborhood “Yard of the Month” awards. She loved to sew her own clothes and embellish store-bought clothes to her own flair. In her spare time, she crocheted anything from small doilies to large banquet-sized tablecloths and blankets. Her favorite crocheting projects were creating matching his-and-her outfits for Kewpie doll couples. Vi had a talent with arts and crafts and created lasting memories during holidays, special events, and at any given time of the year.

Vi is survived by her husband of 53 years, Amado; her son, Jose Lyndon; her daughter, Lynda and husband George; and sisters Aurora and Fe.

A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2018, 11 am, at Christ the King Church in Norfolk. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 7, from 6 to 8 pm, at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville location.
