IN THE CARE OF

Nelsen Williamsburg

Williamsburg - Dana Schaefer Maddocks, 95, passed peacefully on July 29th with her best friend Bob at her side. Born and raised in Baltimore, MD, Dana made her entrance into the world on Christmas Day 1920 to parents, Myrtle Fifer Schaefer and John Schaefer. Dana attended Seton high school in Baltimore. In her twenties, Dana married the charming Navy Ensign, the late Captain USN (Retired) William John Maddocks, and soon after started her family. Dana devoted much of her life to making a happy home for her military family as they traveled from duty station to duty station, coast to coast, within the United States and overseas throughout her husband's 30 year Naval career. Dana was the glue that held it all together. As the ultimate military wife, mother, and entertainer, Dana relished welcoming family, friends, military and civilian dignitaries into her home. She was a talented, adventurous cook whose culinary talents were appreciated by all who had the pleasure of being included at her table. Dana was a volunteer par excellence. She happily dove into the activities of the Officer Wives Clubs and Navy Relief wherever she temporarily called home. In Williamsburg, Dana was a faithful volunteer at Community Hospital and a zealous member of the Green Springs Garden Club taking her turn as chairman of the annual Christmas Homes Tour. Dana had a caring heart and what seemed like endless energy. Predeceased by her parents, husband and a daughter, Pamela Ann Gurley, Dana is survived and cherished by her dear and devoted friend and companion, Bob Kirtley. Theirs was one of the great love stories. Also left to hold her memory are her daughter, Kristina Maddocks Rowan, and son, Michael Driscoll Maddocks, his wife, Debbie, four grandchildren, Tara Colton Boyd, Stoddard Austin Rowan, John Paul Rowan and Morgan Driscoll Maddocks and four great grandchildren, Stoddard Griffin Rowan, Tyler David Rowan, Celia Barbara Rowan and Neva Ray Boyd. A private graveside service will be held at Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Humane Society, 430 Waller Mill Rd., Williamsburg VA 23185. Online condolences may be shared with family at www.nelsencares.com
