IN THE CARE OF

Nelsen Williamsburg

Hazel C. Andrews, 92, of Williamsburg, VA, passed away April 13, 2021. She was born October 6, 1928 in Welshpool, Wales, UK. Hazel was the middle of seven children, five boys and two girls, to John and Sarah Cartwright. When she was age nine, the family moved to Lavington in Wiltshire, England. There she continued to grow up in a very close and loving family through the Depression years and World War 2. She attended what is now Wiltshire College, after achieving the second highest grade on a countrywide admission exam. Hazel then served two years in the Women’s Royal Air Force. This was followed by secretarial and administrative work near home and in London, including a position with New Scotland Yard. It was in London where she met then 2nd Lieutenant George Andrews U.S. Army, stationed at Bridge Norton New Oxford. He became her best friend, love and companion for life. They married in England on June 18, 1955. Hazel devoted her life to her husband and their daughter Marilyn. She loved homemaking, cooking, gardening, dancing, and travel. She also worked several times both in the U.S. and overseas in secretarial and administrative assistant positions, and did volunteer work. She accompanied her husband on all his military assignments (except Greenland and Vietnam) and his post-military retirement jobs in the U.S. and overseas. They made home overseas in England, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Marshall Islands, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, and in the U.S. in Virginia, New York, Kansas, Michigan, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Florida and Texas. Hazel was a warm, cheerful, sincere, outgoing person who made many friends throughout the world. She and George moved to Williamsburg in 1993, living at Kingsmill for twenty years before moving to Brookdale in 2013. Retirement brought them more travel including several cruises in Asia and around South America, and many trips back to England and elsewhere in Europe and the U.S. Hazel is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Masson and son-in-law, Robert Rosenswig; grandchildren, Daniel and Rylen Rosenswig of Albany, NY; grandson, Alec Masson of Tallahassee, FL; great grandchildren, Margot and Wyatt Masson of Tallahassee, FL; brother, Leonard Cartwright of Sydney, Astralia; and sister-in-law, Sarah Anderson of Peterborough, NH. She will be interred with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Online condolences may be shared at www.nelsenwilliamsburg.com.
