John “Jack” Holl, a native Minnesotan, passed away just before Father’s Day. He was 88. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Marie Holl; and sisters, Elaine and Carolyn. Jack grew up on the family farm and attended Popple Grove School through 8th grade, and graduated from Waubun High School. He was drafted and served two years in the U.S. Army in the 1950s, and he loved to share stories of his time at Forts Ord, Sill, Lee, and Gordon. He returned to Minnesota and began working at the Waubun Elevator, which he purchased in 1965. Jack owned and operated the grain elevator business until he sold it and retired in 1996. He also served on the Waubun City Council as a member and as mayor for nearly three decades. Jack’s hobbies included gardening, watching sports, and travel. He was a long-time season ticketholder for the Minnesota Vikings and a lifelong fan of Notre Dame football. Along with more than four decades of annual family Christmas trips to Maui and travel throughout the United States and Europe, Jack and his wife Marge enjoyed memorable trips in retirement to Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Bangkok, Nepal and Vietnam, including travel on the Orient Express. In addition to Marge, his wife of 57 years, Jack is survived by their daughter, Shawn (Steve Thompson); grandson, Steven; brothers, Ted Holl and Bob (Kathy) Holl; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral arrangements are private, and burial will take place at St. John’s Abbey Cemetery in Collegeville, Minnesota.
