Kathryn “Kay” Banick Braig was born on April 17, 1923 and passed away on January 29, 2023. She was ninety-nine years old, a few months short of her 100th birthday. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Vincent Braig; her parents, John and Anna Hurney Banick; brother, Dr. John Banick; and sisters, Clare DeAugustine and Marion Mosier. Kathryn is survived by her three sons, Richard (Nonnie), Robert (Christine), and Douglas Braig; along with eight grandchildren, (Chip, Jay, Erinn, Mitch, John, Jacob, Zachary, Rachel) and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Edward, and Gene (Pat) Banick; along with many nieces and nephews. She loved them all dearly. Kathryn worked as a secretary at NASA, where she met her husband, Richard, the love of her life. He passed away when Kathryn was forty-six years old, and she decided to return to the workforce and help the American Cancer Society. Several years later, she became a librarian for the Mariners Museum. Detailed and organized, Kay excelled in helping maritime authors on various research projects. Kay enjoyed volunteering and was a member of St. Mary’s Guild, and the PEO Sisterhood Chapter 1 organization. She also volunteered at Mount Carmel Elementary School, Riverside Hospital, and the V.A. Hospital. Kathryn stayed active her entire life. She enjoyed reading historical novels, needlepoint, and listening to Big Band music. Her many creative projects included knitting baby caps for hospitals, and together with her partner, she sold her homemade Christmas ornaments to many shops across the country, including the Christmas Shoppe on Duke of Gloucester Street in Williamsburg. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 2nd at 9:30 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with the funeral to follow at 10 a.m. A private family burial will be held after the mass. The family would like to thank Patriots Colony, both Teresa, and Dr. Khreis of Riverside Hospice, and Kathy Topps, for taking care of Grandma Kay these last few months.
