Elizabeth Ann Sims

Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Sims, age 63, passed away unexpectedly at her Culpeper residence on Thursday, June 10, 2021. Liz leaves her loving father, Edgar W. “Sonny” Sims, Jr.; siblings Cindy Sims (affectionately known as Little Sis), Joseph S. Desper, Jr. (Amanda) and Tammy Lynn Desper. Nieces and nephews, Jordan Rebecca, Jonathan Stuart, Allison Elizabeth, and Andrew Joseph Desper and Leyla Epperson, as well as special friends, Jack and Debbie Fincham. Liz also leaves her best friend, Robin Smith and son Eric, whose friendship and companionship to Liz are greatly appreciated by the family. She is preceded in death by her husband Jeff DeShields, mother Patricia Jones Irwin and step-father Doyle, step-mother Jeannette Sims, and brother Edgar W. Sims, III. She is also preceded in death by her paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Edgar W. Sims, Sr. and maternal grandparents Allen Jones and Georgia Robbins. Born November 4, 1957 in Graham,Texas to Edgar W. “Sonny” Sims, Jr. and Patricia Jones Sims, Liz grew up on the family farm near Rapidan, Virginia. Liz studied at Old Dominion University where she showcased her musical talents in piano, guitar and vocals. She made her home in the tidewater area of Virginia before moving back to her hometown of Culpeper in 2010. Until her health began declining, she worked at Kids Central for several years and at Culpeper Early Head Start program where she was considered the resident grandmother, a role that she completely embraced and cherished, especially when reading to the children and giving them hugs. Liz was passionate about animals, but her constant companion was her rescue cat, Big Boy. Liz also enjoyed time with her family and friends, but she especially enjoyed family get togethers at Cindy’s home and eating out at local restaurants. Liz was outgoing and friendly to everyone she met, had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. She will be dearly missed and forever in the hearts of those she loved. Please join Liz’s family in celebrating her life on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at Reformation Lutheran Church, 601 Madison Road, Culpeper, Virginia, with Pastor Brad Hales officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will be private. Because of her love for animals, memorial contributions can be made to Culpeper Felines and Friends, P.
