Obituary of Alice Mae Shaffer
Alice Mae Shaffer, 84, of Indianapolis passed away on July 8, 2021. Alice was born February 8, 1937 to Herbert F. and Ruth V. (Martin) Miller. She was born in Frankfort, IN, grew up on a farm near Geetingsville, and graduated from Rossville High School where she met and married her loving husband of 58 years Stanley J. Shaffer. Alice was extremely devoted to her family, but also dedicated nearly 45 years as the “uniform lady” for the Pike High School marching bands, orchestra, and choir. An excellent seamstress, she made sure all the band uniforms, concert dresses, etc. fit perfectly. She loved working with the band staff, the students, the various volunteers, and developed numerous lifelong friendships over her 45 year career working with and supporting the Pike High School Marching Band. In addition, Alice enjoyed watching sports of all sorts, but was a huge fan of both the Indiana Pacers and Purdue basketball. She would frequently watch the game, the replay of the game, and in many cases a second replay if it was a really good game. And, if there were no games, she was always willing to take on the challenge of a new jigsaw puzzle and wouldn’t stop until it was completed. But more than anything else, she loved spending as much time as possible with her sons, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. She always had that wonderful smile and sparkle in her eye when she was with her family. Alice was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Stanley, her mother, father, and brothers (Dale, Wayne, and Lee). Alice is survived by her sons, Byron and Bradley (wife: Michele), her grandchildren (Brian and Mackenzie), her loving sister and best friend Carolyn (Miller) Pasanen, and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, July 29th at 6:30pm at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested in Alice’s name to: Pike Performing Arts Boosters (PPAB); Pike High School Performing Arts Dept., 5401 W. 71st St., Indianapolis, IN 46268.
