Angelo Joseph Carnaghi

Angelo (Ang) Joseph Carnaghi passed peacefully among family in his home on his 95th birthday, Monday, November 15, 2021. Ang was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend and mentor to many. He had many successes and accomplishments in his life, but probably the ones he valued the most were seeing the successes of his children, grandchildren and friends, of whom everyone he met was instantly a friend. He was married to his wife, Jeannine Lowery Carnaghi, for 65 years before her death in 2015. They were truly a remarkable couple who deeply loved and respected each other—even when disagreeing. Their personalities and sense of humor complemented each other well and always made for lots of laughs. They met at Purdue where Ang studied Pharmacy, played football and was captain of the team, remaining loyal to their alma mater throughout their lives—cheering on the basketball and football teams for many years as well as endowing a scholarship fund. Ang was a first- generation college student—getting to Purdue literally—by train majoring in Pharmacy, while working in his fraternity’s dining room for meals and playing football. Many people helped him along the way, and he would always credit others (friends, parents of friends, faculty, staff, and coaches) for their support. From Purdue, Jeannine and Ang began married life in Indianapolis with Ang joining Eli Lilly & Company in 1950 and retiring in 1990 as Vice President of Manufacturing, responsible for the production of most of the company’s human-drug products. Ang was also proud to have served his country in the US Army as 2nd Lieutenant/ Co CDR, 45th Infantry of the Philippine Scouts during WWII. In his “free” time, Ang volunteered with the United Way, Junior Achievement, SCORE, the Service Club of Indianapolis and his true love— coaching CYO football for many years at St. Pius X. He was awarded the St. John Bosco Award for outstanding service to youth in 1972. He also mentored any number of high school students taking them on college visits and into various businesses. He received an Honorary Doctorate from Purdue University in 1993. Ang received other honors throughout his career, and he hung them in a most distinguished and practical place—his garage. He was both honored and humbled to be singled out for his hard work, but his true delight came in service to others. Ang is survived by his children, daughter Jill Carnaghi and her husband Paul Schimmele and their children Sarah and Michael Schimmele, son Mike Carnaghi and his wife Micki and their son Matthew, son Mark Carnaghi, daughter Jan Carnaghi and her daughter Jackie, his sister Katie McClaren and many nieces and nephews. We looked up to you when we were little, and we now realize even more how big your heart and spirit were when it came to loving us and taking care of all of us. A Mass in Ang’s memory will be held Friday, November 19 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 7200 Sarto Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46240, followed by a buffet and gathering at the Knights of Columbus, 2100 East 71st Street at 12:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend either or both events to celebrate his life and friendship with memories and laughter.
