Miriam Adelaide Langley Abbott

MIRIAM ADELAIDE (LANGLEY) ABBOTT, of Tallahassee, Fla., formerly of Fort Wayne, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, following a major stroke. Born Dec. 14, 1912, in Chicago, Ill., she was the oldest of seven children. She lived in several major U.S. cities and Canada while she was growing up. She met G. Warren Abbott at Albion College, Albion, Mich. She graduated in 1935 with a degree in Home Economics. She and Warren were married on Sept. 6, 1936, and celebrated 71 years together before his death in 2007. She and Warren raised five children in Midland, Mich. from 1936 to 1969, then moved to Fort Wayne where they lived from 1969 to 2007. Miriam did a variety of volunteer work in Midland. She worked at the hospital and drove the elderly to appointments. She was a Cub Scout leader and often a room mother at school. In Fort Wayne, she was a member of IPFW Sew & Chat, and she and Warren were founding members of Beautiful Saviour Lutheran Church. "Her kindness and caring for others was never- ending." Survivors include her children, Kenneth Abbott of Clarkston, Mich., Thomas Abbott of Colorado Springs, Colo., John Abbott of Tallahassee, Fla., and Betty Jean Schweitzer of San Jose, Calif.; sisters, Ruth Shuter, Pat Read and Jean McNutt; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, one sister, and her oldest son, David Abbott. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, with visitation from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A short graveside service will immediately follow funeral service at Covington Memorial Gardens.
