Obituary of Steve Johnson Campbell
Steve Johnson Campbell, 92, of Bloomington, IN passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2013 surrounded by his family at his home. He was born on June 27, 1920 in Morristown, TN, the son of the late Thomas and Lena B. (Luttrell) Campbell. Steve graduated from Morristown High School. From 1940 – 1943 he was a reporter and editor of the Newport Times, a family owned newspaper. While in Newport, TN, Steve was a member of the Tennessee National Guard until the fall of 1943 when he volunteered in World War II. He served in the U.S. Army Engineers in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as an administrative non- commissioned officer. As an army reservist he also was on active duty during the Korean War. While home on leave, he married Sara Williams Campbell on D-Day, June 6, 1944. His education was obtained after his military service. He received his B.A. in English from Carson-Newman College in 1949 and his M.A. from Peabody School of Education at Vanderbilt University in 1952. His major was Education Administration with an English minor. For six years he spent his life as a teacher and administrator in Tennessee and for 31 years in the public schools of Los Angeles County California. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Chapter at Claremont College. Steve was a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in Bloomington. When Steve lived in California, his hobby was gardening which was year-round. For 39 years, he enjoyed traveling and vacationing at the California beaches and deserts. Steve was a dedicated family man; he enjoyed his two children, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Steve is survived by his devoted wife Sara of 68 years; his son, Tom (Barbara) Campbell of Peoria, AZ; his daughter, Jane (Scott) MacKenzie of Bloomington, IN; sister, Alice Lillian Norton of Ojai, CA; nine grandchildren, Sharon (Sean) Mortenson of Scottsdale, AZ, Laura (Nathan) Heckman of Oman, Stephen (Elisa) Campbell of Baltimore, MD, Emily Campbell of Tempe, AZ, Sarah (Chad) Maddox, Karen, Matthew, Katherine, and Caroline MacKenzie all of Bloomington and Indianapolis area; and six great grandchildren, with one on the way. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Luttrell Campbell. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, March 3, 2013 at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, officiated by Pastor Tom Ellsworth. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bloomington Hospital Foundation (I.U. Hospice), P.O.
