Alfred “Ed” E. Small, 84, of Evansville, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2013, at Deaconess Hospital. He was born February 6, 1929.
He was a lifelong resident of Evansville and graduated from Bosse High School in 1946. He went to Indiana University and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and earned a BS degree in Marketing in 1950. In 1950 he began working in the family business, Universal Furniture Company, where he served as President until it closed in 1985. Ed and his wife, Dot, owned and operated the Old Evansville Antique Mall from 1986 to 1996 in the buildings which had housed Universal Furniture Company. He was a past president of the National Wholesale Furniture Association. Ed also was a partner in several local companies, Golden Raintree Winery, Chem-Farm and ABC Building Corporation. Ed was a member of Reed Lodge 316, a lifetime member of the Scottish Rite and Hadi Shrine, and was the Historian for the Royal Order of Jesters. He was a member of the Westside Nut Club, Kennel Club and Evansville Rotary Club.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Dot, in 2011.
He is survived by his son, Mike (Jane) Small; and grandchildren, Michael and Jamie.
A gathering of friends to celebrate Ed’s life will be held from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Friday, August 30, 2013, at Alexander West Chapel. By his wish, a private burial is to be held for his family.
