WILLIAM F. McNABNEY, Ed.D Dr. William F. McNabney, age 90, a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region died on October 26, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rose Ellen (nee Cubit) McNabney, son Mark William McNabney, granddaughter Ashley Marie McNabney and brother James E. (Margaret) McNabney; nephews Tim (Lorrie) McNabney, James M. (Nadia) McNabney, Thomas E. (Rosemary) Cubit II; niece Joy McNabney (Jeff) Main; grand nephews Sean McNabney, Evan and Miles Main, James S. McNabney, Thomas E. (Julie) Cubit III and David (Shannon) Cubit; grand nieces Madeline and Jocelyne McNabney; and many great-grand nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by parents Bland and Sylvia (Miller) McNabney, brother Leland P. McNabney and his wife Lorraine, brothers in-law Thomas Cubit and his wife Julia, and John Cubit. After graduating from the Hammond Schools, Dr. McNabney served in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations in World War II earning Battle Stars in the Campaigns of Sicily and Italy. After the war he enrolled in Indiana University where he earned his Bachelors, Masters, and in 1969 his Doctorate Degree. He completed additional graduate work at the University of Chicago, and Loyola University, Purdue University, Calumet College of St. Joseph, and South Suburban College in South Holland, IL. In 1950, he began teaching at Irving Jr. High School in Hammond and in 1953 at Hammond High School, where he served as Chairman of the Social Studies Department and as a guidance counselor for the class of 1964. n 1965, he was appointed Assistant Principal. In 1966 he was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Personnel for the Hammond Public Schools. From 1971 he served as Director of Guidance and Testing until his retirement in 1987. In 1978 Dr. McNabney became a Director of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Hammond/Highland and advanced to Vice President in 1987. He was elected Chairman of the Board in June of 1990 and served as Chairman and Vice President until his retirement in 2013. Dr. McNabney was elected Worshipful Master of McKinley Masonic Lodge No. 712 F&AM of Hammond in 1979, and was appointed Grand Marshal of the Grand Lodge of F&AM of the State of Indiana in 1982-1983. He served as High Priest of Hammond Chapter #117, Royal Arch Masons of the York Rite Masons and held membership in the Hammond Council # 90 Royal and Select Masters of the York Rite and in the Hammond Commandry #41 Knights Templar. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend. He was a member of the Orak Temple Drum and Bugle Corps and the Motor Patrol of the Ancient Accepted Order of the Mystic Shrine. He held membership in many educational, Masonic and service organizations. Dr. McNabney authored several historical books including “A History of Hammond High School”, “A History of McKinley Masonic Lodge”, “A History of the Regional Federal Credit Union”, “A History of First Federal S&L of Hammond”, and “A History of VFW Post 717 of St. John”. Friends may pay their respects at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue, Schererville, IN from 3:00-8:00 PM Friday, November 1, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home with Deacon Phil Muvich of the St. Maria Goretti Parish of Dyer, IN presiding.
