Obituary of Harvey C Bunke
Harvey C Bunke was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on November 7, 1921. He graduated from Oshkosh Public High School in 1939. In 1941 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. After serving several years in the Southwest Pacific, Staff Sergeant Bunke was discharged as a highly decorated veteran, having received four Distinguished Flying Crosses and two Air Medals during combat actions in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Harvey took advantage of the 1944 GI Bill to further his education and enrolled as a student at the University of Illinois during the spring semester of 1944 where he completed his work for his PhD in 1951. After a year of government service as a US Government economist in Seattle Washington, he returned to the academic world as a professor at the University of Iowa from 1952 to 1964. He then accepted the post of President of Western Washington College in Bellingham Washington, where he served from 1964 to 1967. While at Western Washington he was instrumental in the planning and obtaining the funding for the widely acclaimed and award winning Fairhaven College. In 1967, Harvey joined the faculty of Indiana University. During his tenure at the IU School of Business he served in many capacities including Chair of the Undergraduate Program, Director of the School of Savings and Loan, Associate Dean and longtime Editor of “Business Horizons.” Late in his career he joined the Indiana University Foundation as Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. Because of his effective teaching and his many publications, he was a popular speaker and served as a Visiting Professor at a number of universities, including Oxford University in England, the National University of Singapore, and the University of California. He married Margaret (Peg) Carlsten in 1947, the year they both graduated with Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Illinois. Peg preceded him in death, leaving his side seven years ago. He is survived by his three children C. Martin (Tina) Bunke, Richard Carlsten (Ellen) Bunke, and A. Christine (Karl) Swenson. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The Bunke family wishes to extend its most sincere thanks to the staff of the comprehensive wing, who for the past three years provided Harv with loving and gentle care far beyond the level expected.
