Obituary of Buford Eugene Devor
Norfolk - Buford E. Devor, 80, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend passed away on Aug. 7, 2017. Born in Bluefield, VA, Buford was a long-time resident of Norfolk, dedicating 26 years of his life to serving the community as a member of the Norfolk Police Dept. where he retired as a sergeant. He also worked in security for 14 years at DePaul Medical Center. In 1962 Buford met the love of his life, Sylvia M. Branch with whom he spent 55 years celebrating their love and dedication to each other and their family. Buford was an amazing athlete who led Graham High School in Bluefield to the state basketball championship. He was offered full scholarships in basketball, football and golf, before accepting an offer to play basketball for South Texas College. After college Buford served his country with the U.S. Army for 6 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph F. and Grace L. Thompson Devor; brothers, Richard and Ralph Jr.; and sister, Patricia Smith. Buford is survived by his wife, Sylvia Devor; daughter, Debra Glaunert and husband Dick; daughter, Cathy Devor-Coppolino and husband John; brother and best friend, Ronald Devor and partner Connie Brikholz; grandchildren, Brian Doka and wife Megan, Lisa Doka and fiancé Robert Moyer, Angela Parish, Brianna Coppolino, and Johnny Coppolino; and his five great-grandchildren, Nora Doka, Amelia Babb, Elijah, Patrick and Rory Parish. Buford was a man of great integrity who always put family first, but his family knew he also found tremendous joy in golf. He was a long standing member of the Kempsville Greens Golf Club where he played almost daily with the “Kempsville Marauders" or the “Blitz.” A celebration of his life will take place at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel at 2:00 PM on Sat. Aug. 12th, followed by burial at Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday night at the funeral home.
