Obituary of Mary Hendren Smith
It is with great sadness that Mary Louise Hendren Smith known to her friends as “Teeny” passed away at the age of 89 on the morning of March 31, 2018 at Sentara Virginia Beach after receiving wonderful care from the ER and ICU staff and Sentara Hospice. The family is also thankful to all of the staff who lovingly cared for Mrs. Smith at Seaside The Health Center at Atlantic Shores. Born on September 16, 1928 Mrs. Smith, a native of Norfolk and longtime resident of Virginia Beach was the owner of Smith Electric Company, Inc. and Foxridge Farms LTD. She was a 1945 graduate of Norview High School. She was a Charter member of Foundry United Methodist Church established in 1959 and a Charter member of Lynnhaven Chapter #184 O.E.S. established in 1967. She was a member of Janis Club of Khedive Temple and a Life member of the Virginia Beach General Hospital Auxiliary. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for over 40 years. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her husband Herbert Drewry Smith, her grandson Stuart Drew Witcher, her parents Frances Martin Hendren and Leon Barnes Hendren, her sisters Catherine Anne Hendren Lachow and Frances Virginia Hendren Davis, and her brother William Henry Hendren. Survivors include her sister Margaret Elizabeth Hendren Perry (Robert) of Connecticut, her daughters Marsha Gaye Smith Witcher (Jim) and Mary Lou Smith (Rick) of Virginia Beach, grandson David Patrick Witcher (Felisha) of Wilmington NC and great-granddaughter Juliana Belle Witcher, granddaughter Jamie Nicole Quincy of Georgia, nephews David Martin Brown (Julia) of Virginia Beach and Timothy Lachow of California, niece Sheila Louise Craven of Virginia Beach, great-nephews George Martin Drew Lachow of California and John Craven of New York, and great-niece Catherine Macmillan Lachow of California. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Smith and Williams Funeral Home Kempsville. Burial will be private at Forest Lawn Cemetery with a Memorial Service to be held at Foundry United Methodist Church on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. by the Rev. Doctor Sandra Benton Plasters with a reception to follow thereafter at the church. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be given in her name to Foundry United Methodist Church, Lynnhaven Masonic Lodge #220, or charity of your choice.
