Obituary of Robert Gene Smith
Robert Gene Smith, 73, of Fredericksburg passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2018. Robert Smith spent 21 years in the United States Marine Corps and retired as Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt) which is the 9th and highest enlisted rank. Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, he was employed by Honeywell Federal System Inc. as a Contract Negotiator selling computer systems, maintenance, and support contracts to the Navy. He also took on the role of an entrepreneur and opened a successful family business, Sport Shack Inc. that was in Stafford County VA for 10 years. This provided him the opportunity to get to know many of the outstanding people that lived and worked in the Fredericksburg and surrounding areas. As an owner of a family business, he was able to enjoy working side by side with his two sons. He enjoyed bike riding, fishing, boating and target shooting, especially with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his two sisters, Sue Watkins and Fran Fox, his wife of 51 years, Sharon Smith, his children, Jason Smith and Brad Smith, and their wives Natasha and Lynn, his nieces and nephews, his grandchildren, and a great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Luella Smith; sister Mary Elliott and brother Allan Smith. A funeral service will be held at Noon on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery.
