Obituary of John Frederick Cochran
John Frederick Cochran was born on January 6th, 1924 in Dubois, Pennsylvania to Frederick and Nora Cochran. He was the oldest of four children and attended DuBois high school, Albion College, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed a five year internship and residency in internal medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. John was married to his first wife, Edith Ferguson, in 1948 and served in the U. S. Air Force as a Medical Officer in Tachikawa, Japan from 1951-53. After establishing a clinic with his brother in San Anselmo, CA, John decided to try student health medicine and moved to Bloomington Indiana, where he was employed by the IU Health Center from 1959-1987, with a brief hiatus at the University of Colorado Student Health Service in Boulder from 1962-63. John was married to his second wife, Joan Cochran in 1989. He is preceded in death by his wife Joan, and son Dirk. He is survived by a sister, Jane Peterson, and three children--Lynn Cochran of Bloomington, IN, John Cochran of Princeton, NJ (Tina), Joel Cochran of Charleston, SC (Carrie) and four grandchildren (Chelsea Schuyler, Anna Lennard, and Beauregard and Maisie Cochran). John and Joan were active members of the First Methodist Church in Bloomington, and John was passionately involved in many community service initiatives in Bloomington. He was a volunteer physician for Planned Parenthood for 24 years, and a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross, the Mental Health Clinic, and Meals on Wheels. All those who knew and loved John appreciated his dry sense of humor, love of rhymes, and concern for others. He was an avid marathon runner into his 50s, practiced meditation and mindfulness before either were common practice, loved backpacking with his sons in the Smokey and Wind River Mountains, and was a loving father, grandfather, husband, and good friend to many. Memorial contributions can be made to the Bloomington Animal Shelter. The family wishes for all services to be private. Online condolences may be given at www.DayDeremiahFrye.com
