Obituary of Milford Anderson Weaver
Milford Anderson Weaver, 92, of Kings Way Road, Martinsville, passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at Kings Grant Retirement Community. He was a life-long resident of Martinsville and Henry County. He was born on August 14, 1925, in Martinsville to the late Homer David Weaver and Lera Pace Weaver. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Dorothy Smith Weaver, a brother, Dewey Glenwood Weaver and a sister, Patsy Weaver Kagey. Upon his graduation from Martinsville High School in 1943, he volunteered to serve in the Navy where he was a radar operator aboard the USS LSM147. His ship aided in liberating many of the Pacific islands occupied by Japan in WWII. The USS LSM147 eventually picked up an Army Engineering Division in the Philippines and delivered them to Sandi, Japan, as part of the first occupational troops. After his discharge in the Navy, he entered the University of Richmond, where he graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration with a major in Accounting. He served as an officer in his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha and also was a member of the Business Administration Student Government. Upon his graduation he began his career by organizing Virginia Blower Company with his father-in-law, Enfield Bartley Smith in 1950, where he served as President and then CEO until 2017. Milford also served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Bassett. He was an organizing Director of Smith River Community Bank and a Director of Main Street Bank Shares. Milford was president and a member of the Board of Directors of Collinsville Land Corporation at Smith Mountain Lake. He served on the Board of Directors of the Martinsville and Henry County Chamber of Commerce from 1984 – 1989. In 1998, Milford was honored with the Small Business Man of the Year award. He served for 8 years on the Board of Directors for Patrick Henry Community College and 12 years on the Board of Associates at Averett University. Milford was also a member of the Lions Club for 25 years, was on the Board of Directors for the Collinsville YMCA, a founding member of Hope Harbor, on the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity, and also a member of the Martinsville Jaycees. Milford began his journey with Christ at McCabe Memorial Baptist Church, where he was baptized. He was a charter member of Villa Heights Baptist Church where he once served on the Building and Steering Committee, Board of Deacons, Finance Committee, was a Sunday School Director and teacher, a choir member, and trustee. Milford enjoyed his many travels with his beloved wife Dorothy. Some of his fondest memories were Carrier Dealership trips with her to many amazing places around the world. Milford is survived by his daughter, Cathy Jones and son-in-law, Alan Jones of Norfolk, his son, Andy Weaver and daughter-in-law, Donna Weaver of Collinsville, his grandchildren, Lindsay Miller, Emily Jones, Bartley Weaver, Kristen Weaver, Emily Dove, Jonathan Dove and wife Lily Dove, and Zachary Dove; his great grandchildren, Norah Miller, Amelia Dove, and River Dove; brothers David Weaver and Alvin Weaver; and many special nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Villa Heights Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. and will be officiated by Reverend Keith Spangenberg. Interment will be at Roselawn Burial Park. Visitation will be from 11:30 – 1:00 p.m. prior to the service and at other times at the home of Andy and Donna Weaver in Collinsville.
