Obituary of Blanche Satterlee
Blanche Cleo “Pinky” Woods Satterlee, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and 17-year resident of Fredericksburg, Virginia passed away peacefully at home at the age of 96 on Friday, February 8, 2019. She is the daughter of the late NOPD Sgt. Allen T. Woods and the late J. Hilda Laurent Woods, sister of the late Very Reverend Monsignor Earl C. Woods, a former Chancellor of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, wife of the late William Crawford Satterlee, Jr., and mother of the late Holly Satterlee Sievers. Blanche is survived by her children: retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. William C. Satterlee III, Dr. Brian C. Satterlee, and Julie Satterlee Zaepfel; her grandchildren Dr. Christen Satterlee Stotts, U.S. Army Major Brian C. “Chip” Satterlee, and Stephen J. Satterlee, and great grandchildren Clairmarie Stotts of Tennessee, Samuel and Luke Satterlee of Maryland, and Cricket and Finn Satterlee of Virginia. Blanche was a longtime member of the Louisiana Colonials-Founders Chapter and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution-Spotsylvania Chapter. She is a recipient of the Order of Saint Louis from the Archdiocese of New Orleans and a former Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of the Rosary parish in New Orleans. Blanche enjoyed traveling and visited numerous U.S. and European destinations. She enjoyed history, road trips to local historical places, authentic New Orleans cuisine, anything chocolate, long conversations, visiting with her many cousins from all sides of the family, listening to or telling a good story, Labrador Retrievers, and shopping. She deeply loved her family, friends, the Roman Catholic Church, and above all, her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Blanche was born November 7, 1922 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Allen and Hilda Woods. Her only sibling, Earl, was born three years later. Pinky met the one and only love of her life, Bill, at a costume King Cake party in New Orleans on February 11, 1939. They married June 27, 1942. After the death of Bill on May 14, 1979, she never remarried. She always said there would never be another Bill Satterlee – he was the love of her life. He called her Darlin’. Blanche was immensely proud of her sons Bill and Brian and all of their accomplishments, her daughter Julie with whom she lived, her granddaughter Chrissie and grandsons Chip and Stephen and all of her great grandchildren whom she held as precious in her heart. Blanche was also very fond of her son-in-law Mark Zaepfel – she called him Chief and he called her Sunshine. She was called Mom, Ma, Granny, Gigi (Great Granny), G.B. (Granny Blanche), Blanche and Pinky. Blanche is the last of her generation in the family and among her close friends. Surely, there was a great reunion with all of her loved ones in Heaven when God called her home. Eternal Rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let the Perpetual Light shine upon her. May she rest in peace, Amen!
