Larry Bowen Hall

Larry Bowen Hall, 87, passed away on March 6, 2019. A native of Norfolk, he was born to the late Charlie and Isolind Hall. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) as an Electrical Engineer. Larry served his country in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a Research Engineer at NASA for 30 years. His work included the first sub-orbital manned rocket launch and telemetry for military fighter jet prototypes and the B-1 bomber. He also worked as a Consultant Engineer for Lockheed Martin. Larry really loved music and began playing piano at three years old. He played with dance bands in the Norfolk area for over 50 years. He played by ear and was especially talented at picking up a tune after hearing just a few notes. Larry also had a green thumb and loved gardening. Everything he planted seemed to grow and grow. He also enjoyed carpentry and working with stained glass. To relax, Larry worked crossword puzzles. He excelled in learning new words with their definitions and spellings. Larry was active in his home church, Calvin Presbyterian. in Norfolk. He served as a deacon and an elder for many years. He also was a pianist for children’s Sunday school and other church events. In addition to serving his church, Larry was a loving husband, father, and grandfather to his wife of 59 years, Bettyann Hall; son, Charles Hall (Amy); daughter, Elizabeth Housianitis (Odyseas); grandchildren, Amanda Hall, Tyler Hall, Cynthia Johnston (William) and Jason Housianitis; and great grandchild Eleni Johnston. He is predeceased by his siblings, Mary Tucker Wood (Lawrence), Charles Bruce "CB" Hall, and Virginia Cook (Marvin). A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 10, 2019, in the Mausoleum Chapel at Rosewood Memorial Park followed by a Celebration of Life service at 3:00 PM at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 2901 E Little Creek Rd, Norfolk.
