Obituary of Edwin Lee Caldwell
Edwin Lee Caldwell, born December 14, 1948 in Kansas City, Missouri, died October 25, 2019 in Bloomington, Indiana. Known as Ed and Ned, he lived in Voorheesville, New York, Ankara, Turkey, Berkeley, California, San Pedro, California, Houston, Texas, but most of his life in Bloomington, Indiana. A lifelong love of the outdoors and science made for a very unique childhood. Ned collected all sorts of creatures and brought them home to his parents (Lynton Keith Caldwell and Helen Walcher Caldwell) and sister, Elaine Caldwell Emmi (Philip Emmi). He spent hours learning about all the sciences and was a very accomplished spelunker. Ed was also a very gifted musician, learning to play the guitar by ear. Tho many remember him for his ceramics. He handbuilt a kiln that could fire 200 pieces at one time, learned how to make raku glazes, and would sometimes work with 100 pounds of clay. Ned graduated from University High School and from Indiana University with a BFA. Ed married the love of his life, Pauline Wolber in 1982 and they were happiest when motorcycling across country or just around Monroe County. They have one son, David Caldwell (Kimberly Meidell Varner) and a granddaughter, Izzabelle Caldwell. Other family members are Matt Emmi, Laura Chukanov, Liliana Chukanov Emmi, Kari Varner, Hunter Varner, Dakota Varner; and cousins Carole Walcher, Marilyn Walcher Weber (Tom Weber), and Joyce Berdine (Dennis Berdine). Ned was a loyal friend and will be missed by all. A celebration of Edwin’s life will be held at a later time.
